Basics

What is Stellar (XLM)?

Stellar is a public, open-source distributed ledger for fast, low-cost cross-border payments and for issuing and transferring digital representations of fiat currencies and other assets. According to the white paper, it is a specialised financial transaction layer rather than a general-purpose platform.

The network uses the Stellar Consensus Protocol (SCP), based on Federated Byzantine Agreement (FBA). Each node chooses a set of trusted validators, and consensus forms where these sets overlap. Ledgers usually close every 5–7 seconds, without mining.

Links to traditional payment systems are provided by regulated intermediaries (anchors), and smart contracts run on the Soroban platform – in WebAssembly, written mainly in Rust.

Use cases

What is XLM used for?

Transaction fees

Every transaction requires a fee in XLM. The base fee is 0.00001 XLM and rises when the network is congested.

Minimum balance

Accounts must keep a minimum XLM reserve. Together with fees, this limits spam and uncontrolled ledger growth.

Smart contracts

Execution and data storage fees for Soroban smart contracts are also paid in XLM.

Payments and assets

Stellar is used to send value and to issue digital representations of currencies and other assets.

Tokenomics

XLM supply

At network launch the supply was approx. 100 billion XLM, and an inflation mechanism added approx. 1% per year. In October 2019 the community voted to switch inflation off, and in November 2019 the Stellar Development Foundation permanently removed more than 55 billion of its tokens.

According to the white paper, supply is now effectively fixed – at approx. 50 billion XLM – and no new tokens are expected to be created.

Founders

Who created Stellar?

The issuer of XLM is the Stellar Development Foundation (SDF) – a non-profit founded in 2014, based in San Francisco, which maintains the Stellar codebase. It is led by Denelle Dixon.

According to the white paper, the SDF initially retained approx. 30 billion XLM, and more recent data shows approx. 17 billion XLM in accounts managed by the foundation.
