What is Solana (SOL)?
Solana is a decentralised Layer 1 blockchain for smart contracts, digital asset issuance and token transfers. SOL is the network’s native token.
Consensus combines three elements: Proof-of-History – a hash-based method of ordering events in time – plus Proof-of-Stake and Tower BFT. This lets validators agree on transaction order efficiently.
The Sealevel engine executes transactions that do not touch the same data in parallel. Turbine and Gulf Stream handle fast block propagation and transaction forwarding. In 2025 the independent Firedancer validator client launched on mainnet.
What is the SOL token used for?
Transaction fees
Every transaction requires a fee in SOL. Part of the base fee is burned and the rest goes to the validator. An optional priority fee can be added.
Staking
SOL can be delegated to validators who secure the network. Their rewards are shared with delegators.
Data deposit (rent)
Accounts on the network must keep a minimum SOL balance for the data they store. These funds are returned when the account is closed.
Holder rights
SOL does not grant ownership, profit participation, voting rights or legal claims.
SOL supply and inflation
The initial supply was 500 million SOL. Solana has no maximum supply – new tokens are created through inflation, which started at approx. 8% per year, falls by 15% every year and is set to settle at 1.5%.
According to the white paper, 574,401,608 SOL were in circulation on 10 April 2026. A proposal to speed up the decline in inflation is being discussed – it has not been adopted.
Who created Solana?
Among the people involved in the project, the white paper names Anatoly Yakovenko, associated with Solana Labs, Inc. in the US, and Lily Liu.
According to the white paper, the issuer of SOL is the Solana Foundation (Solana Stiftung) – a foundation registered in 2019 in Zug, Switzerland, which supports the development of the network and its ecosystem.
