What is Ethereum (ETH)?
Ethereum is a decentralised public blockchain that runs smart contracts and decentralised applications (dApps). Programs run in the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), and protocol changes are coordinated through Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs).
Since The Merge in September 2022 the network has run on Proof-of-Stake. Validators who have locked at least 32 ETH propose and confirm blocks. Blocks are produced in 12-second slots grouped into epochs of 32 slots, and finality is usually reached after about 12.8 minutes.
Second-layer networks (rollups) have grown around Ethereum: they process transactions off the main network and publish data to it. Since the Dencun upgrade (2024) they use cheaper blob data.
What is the ETH token used for?
Gas fees
ETH pays for transactions and smart contract execution. Fees are measured in units called gas.
Staking
ETH is the asset staked by validators, who secure the network and receive rewards issued by the protocol.
Application ecosystem
ETH can be sent between users and used as collateral in applications running on Ethereum.
Holder rights
ETH does not grant ownership, profit participation or claims against any entity.
ETH supply
Ethereum has no fixed maximum supply. New ETH goes to validators as rewards, while part of every transaction fee (the base fee, under EIP-1559) is permanently burned.
Depending on network activity, ETH supply can rise or fall. According to the white paper, it stood at 120,685,456 ETH on 27 May 2026.
Who created Ethereum?
Ethereum was proposed in 2013 by Vitalik Buterin – first as an extension of Bitcoin’s capabilities, and later as a standalone platform with a complete virtual machine. The technical specification (Yellow Paper) was written by Gavin Wood.
No single entity runs the network, and the MiCA white paper does not identify an issuer in a formal sense. Development is supported by Stiftung Ethereum (Ethereum Foundation), based in Zug, Switzerland, among others, and protocol changes are made in cooperation between independent developer teams.
