What is Chainlink (LINK)?

Chainlink is a decentralised oracle network that connects smart contracts on blockchains with external data and systems. Data comes from many independent providers and is delivered by a decentralised group of node operators.

Chainlink includes Data Feeds (e.g. asset prices), CCIP for cross-chain messaging and token transfers, Automation, VRF for verifiable randomness and the Chainlink Runtime Environment (CRE).

LINK is an ERC-677 token, compatible with ERC-20 tooling. It is available on Ethereum, BNB Smart Chain, Polygon, Arbitrum, Avalanche C-Chain, Optimism and Solana, among others.

Use cases

What is the LINK token used for?

Paying for oracle services

Node operators receive LINK for retrieving data, performing computation and delivering results to smart contracts.

Staking

Node operators – and, where supported, the community – lock LINK to back oracle services, with possible penalties for poor performance.

Collateral

LINK can serve as collateral supporting the network’s cryptoeconomic security.

Holder rights

LINK does not grant ownership, profit participation or voting rights.

Tokenomics

LINK supply

Total supply is capped at 1 billion LINK. The tokens were generated in 2017 and split into three parts.

35% – public token sale 35% – node operator incentives 30% – team and company

The current circulating supply is published by Chainlink – the white paper refers to chain.link/circulating-supply.

Founders

Who created Chainlink?

According to the white paper, the issuer of LINK is SMARTCONTRACT INC., based in New York, which develops software for decentralised oracle networks. Among the people involved in the project, the document names Sergey Nazarov and Steve Ellis, the company’s CTO.

Chainlink Labs group companies in the UK, Singapore and the Cayman Islands are also involved in its development.
