Basics

What is Cardano (ADA)?

Cardano is a decentralised Layer 1 blockchain for smart contracts, digital asset issuance and token transfers. ADA is its native token.

The network runs on the Ouroboros Praos Proof-of-Stake mechanism. Time is divided into epochs of 432,000 one-second slots (approx. 5 days), and a new block is produced on average every 20 seconds. ADA holders can run their own stake pool or delegate tokens to one – without handing over control of them.

Cardano uses the extended UTXO model (eUTXO). Smart contracts have been available since the Alonzo era thanks to the Plutus language, and developers can also use other tools such as Aiken or Marlowe.

Use cases

What is the ADA token used for?

Transaction fees

ADA pays for transactions, including smart contract execution.

Staking and delegation

Holders can delegate ADA to stake pools and receive rewards while keeping control of their funds.

Governance

Since 2024 Cardano has had on-chain governance (CIP-1694). ADA holders vote directly or through Delegated Representatives (DReps).

Holder rights

ADA does not grant ownership or profit participation.

Tokenomics

ADA supply

Cardano’s maximum supply is 45 billion ADA. Approx. 31.1 billion ADA were in circulation at launch, and the rest forms a reserve that funds staking rewards. In each epoch, transaction fees plus 0.3% of the remaining reserve go into the reward pool.

approx. 31.1 bn – supply at launch approx. 13.9 bn – reserve for rewards

Before rewards are paid out, 20% of the pool goes to the treasury, which funds ecosystem development.

Founders

Who created Cardano?

Among the people involved in the project, the white paper names Charles Hoskinson and Jeremy Wood. According to the white paper, Cardano has no formal issuer and develops in a decentralised way.

Three organisations are involved in the network’s development: Input Output Global (IOG), responsible for research and development, the Cardano Foundation (Cardano Stiftung) and EMURGO, which supports ecosystem growth.
