What is Bitcoin (BTC)?

Bitcoin is the first cryptocurrency – a decentralised, permissionless asset running on a public blockchain. According to the white paper, it is intended to serve as a peer-to-peer medium of exchange and as a store of value. The network is not run by any company or institution.

Network security comes from Proof-of-Work based on the SHA-256 algorithm. Miners compete to find a valid block, and the network treats the chain with the most cumulative computational work as valid. A new block is produced on average every 10 minutes, and difficulty adjusts every 2,016 blocks – roughly every two weeks.

The network has evolved through upgrades such as SegWit (2017) and Taproot (2021), which introduced Schnorr signatures. Fast, low-cost payments are enabled by the Lightning Network – a second-layer protocol based on payment channels that inherits Bitcoin’s security.

Use cases

What is Bitcoin used for?

Peer-to-peer payments

BTC can be sent directly between users, without a bank or other intermediary. Transactions are confirmed by miners.

Store of value

The white paper names store of value as one of Bitcoin’s main uses. The value of BTC can, however, change significantly.

Fees for miners

Users pay transaction fees in BTC. Miners receive them together with the block reward.

Holder rights

Bitcoin does not grant ownership, profit participation, voting rights or claims against anyone. Its functions are technical.

Tokenomics

Bitcoin supply and halving

Bitcoin’s maximum supply is approx. 21 million BTC (exactly 20,999,999.9769 BTC). New BTC is created only as a block reward, and that reward halves every 210,000 blocks – roughly every four years.

3.125 BTCsince the 2024 halving

According to the white paper, approx. 20 million BTC had been mined by May 2026. Some coins may have been permanently lost, so the amount actually available is lower.

Founders

Who created Bitcoin?

Bitcoin was created by a person or group using the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto. In 2008 they published the white paper “Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System”, and in January 2009 they launched the network. The creator’s identity remains unknown, and Satoshi’s last known activity dates from December 2010.

There is no company or legal entity behind Bitcoin – according to the MiCA white paper, no issuer can be identified in a formal sense. The network is maintained by independent miners, node operators and developers around the world.
