What is Uniswap (UNI)?
Uniswap is a decentralised protocol for swapping crypto-assets – mainly ERC-20 tokens – through smart contracts on Ethereum. Instead of a central order book, trades use on-chain liquidity pools, and anyone can create a new market or provide liquidity.
The protocol runs as an automated market maker (AMM): prices change according to predefined mathematical rules as assets in a pool are traded. Each version added new features – v2 brought ERC-20/ERC-20 pairs and flash swaps, v3 concentrated liquidity and multiple fee tiers, and v4 configurable pools through hooks.
The ecosystem also includes UniswapX and Unichain – an Ethereum Layer 2 network announced in October 2024. The UNI token lives on Ethereum, with representations on Arbitrum, BNB Smart Chain and Polygon, among others.
What is the UNI token used for?
Governance
UNI is the native governance token of the Uniswap Protocol. Holders vote on protocol parameters, treasury use and incentive programmes.
Vote delegation
To use your voting rights, UNI must be delegated to an address – your own or someone else’s.
Protocol fees
In November 2025 the “UNIfication” proposal was announced, covering protocol fee activation and UNI burn mechanics, among other things.
Holder rights
UNI does not grant ownership, profit participation or other enforceable rights.
UNI supply
The maximum supply is 1 billion UNI. The genesis supply was split between the community, team, investors and advisors, with a significant portion going to the governance treasury.
- UNI was distributed in September 2020 to earlier users and liquidity providers, among others.
- Tokens can be burned by sending them to burn addresses.
- According to the white paper, the smart contract owner may be able to change the supply.
- The “UNIfication” proposal includes UNI burn mechanics linked to fees.
Who created Uniswap?
The Uniswap protocol is developed by Universal Navigation Inc. (Uniswap Labs) in the US, led by CEO Hayden Adams. According to the white paper, it is the issuer of UNI.
The Uniswap Foundation is also involved in the ecosystem’s development. Decisions about the protocol are taken through votes by UNI holders.
