Basics

What is TRON (TRX)?

TRON is a Layer 1 blockchain built for scalable smart contracts, low-cost transactions and decentralised applications (dApps). TRX is the network’s native token.

The network runs on Delegated Proof-of-Stake. Blocks are produced and transactions confirmed by 27 elected Super Representatives (SRs). Holders who stake TRX can vote.

Smart contracts run in the TRON Virtual Machine (TVM), which is compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine – making it easier to port contracts from Ethereum. Tokens on the network use the TRC-20 and TRC-10 standards.

Use cases

What is the TRX token used for?

Bandwidth and energy

Staking TRX gives you network resources – bandwidth and energy – needed to run transactions and smart contracts.

Voting

Staked TRX gives voting power in Super Representative elections; SRs take part in votes on network changes.

Staking

Holders who stake TRX can receive part of the rewards earned by Super Representatives.

Fees

Transaction and data storage fees are paid in TRX.

Tokenomics

TRX supply

According to the white paper, the total supply of TRX was 100 billion tokens, and more than 87 billion TRX were in circulation in 2025. Some tokens are periodically burned, which according to the document reduces supply over time.

The 2017 token sale offered 40 billion TRX. After the network’s own mainnet launched in 2018, the ERC-20 TRX tokens (on Ethereum) were burned.

Founders

Who created TRON?

TRON was founded by Justin Sun, who stepped back from formal leadership of the project in 2021. Former CTO Lucien Chen played a major role in the early protocol design.

Development was initially led by the TRON Foundation, set up in 2017. In 2021 the foundation was dissolved and governance passed to the TRON DAO – a decentralised body coordinating development, upgrades and community funding.
