What is Shiba Inu (SHIB)?
Shiba Inu was created in 2020 as a memecoin on Ethereum. Over time an ecosystem has grown around the token, including the ShibaSwap decentralised exchange, staking, NFTs and games, as well as the Shibarium second-layer network.
SHIB is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum. Shibarium – a second-layer network launched in August 2023 – is intended to lower costs and increase transaction throughput in the ecosystem.
According to the white paper, no formal issuer of SHIB can be identified – the project is described as a decentralised ecosystem governed through SHIB DAO structures.
What is SHIB used for?
DAO voting
SHIB can be used for voting within the SHIB DAO.
Staking
SHIB staking is available in the ecosystem.
ShibaSwap
SHIB is used on the ShibaSwap decentralised exchange.
Holder rights
SHIB does not grant ownership, profit or contractual rights. The white paper stresses that it is not a utility token under MiCA.
SHIB supply
The initial supply was 1 quadrillion (1,000,000,000,000,000) SHIB. At launch, half went to a Uniswap liquidity pool and half to Vitalik Buterin, who in 2021 burned about 90% of the tokens he received and donated the rest to charity.
According to the white paper, approx. 410.5 trillion SHIB have been burned in total, leaving a supply of approx. 589.5 trillion (data from February 2026). Burning is linked to fees on Shibarium, among other things.
Who created Shiba Inu?
The project was started by a person or group using the pseudonym Ryoshi. The white paper also names Shytoshi Kusama (a pseudonym) and the SHIB Doggy DAO Foundation in the Cayman Islands as people and entities involved in the project.
No formal issuer can be identified – the ecosystem develops in a decentralised way, with decisions taken through DAO structures.
