What is Polygon (POL)?

Polygon is a blockchain infrastructure project aimed at scalability, interoperability and usability in the Ethereum ecosystem. Its core component is Polygon PoS – an EVM-compatible network that regularly commits checkpoints to Ethereum.

Polygon PoS runs on Proof-of-Stake: validators stake POL, and holders can delegate tokens to them. The Heimdall layer (built on the Cosmos SDK and CometBFT) coordinates validators and submits checkpoints to Ethereum, while the Bor layer handles block production and transaction execution.

The ecosystem also includes Agglayer – a cross-chain settlement layer (since January 2024) – and Polygon CDK, a toolkit for building zero-knowledge-powered chains. In September 2024 the MATIC token was replaced by POL at a 1:1 ratio.

Use cases

What is the POL token used for?

Gas on Polygon PoS

POL is the gas token of Polygon PoS – transaction fees are paid in POL.

Staking and delegation

Validators stake POL to secure the network, and holders can delegate their tokens to them.

Governance and treasury

POL is used for governance and to fund the community treasury.

Holder rights

POL does not grant ownership, profit participation, redemption claims or equity in any entity.

Tokenomics

POL supply

The initial supply of POL was 10 billion tokens – the same as MATIC. POL has no maximum supply: for the first ten years, issuance can be up to approx. 2% of the initial supply per year, going to validator rewards and the community treasury, subject to governance decisions.

Part of the base fees on Polygon PoS is burned (EIP-1559) – according to the white paper, at a rate of approx. 0.27% a year.

Founders

Who created Polygon?

Polygon grew out of Matic Network, founded in India in 2017 by a group of Ethereum developers: Jaynti Kanani, Sandeep Nailwal and Anurag Arjun. Mihailo Bjelic joined them later.

According to the white paper, the issuer of POL is Matic Network (BVI) Ltd., a British Virgin Islands company in the Polygon Labs group. The Polygon Foundation is also involved in the project.
