What is Polkadot (DOT)?
Polkadot is an open multichain protocol in which independent blockchains – parachains – can work together, sharing security and consensus. Everything is coordinated by the Relay Chain, which is responsible for security, consensus and messaging between networks.
Validators are selected using Nominated Proof-of-Stake (NPoS). Blocks are produced by BABE, and finality is provided by GRANDPA. Communication between chains uses the XCM (Cross-Consensus Messaging) standard.
Since September 2024, parachains have accessed Relay Chain resources through Agile Coretime – in bulk or on demand – instead of slot auctions. The community is also working on JAM (Join-Accumulate Machine), a successor to the current Relay Chain architecture, whose rollout depends on governance decisions.
What is the DOT token used for?
Staking and nomination
Holders secure the network under NPoS by nominating validators and can receive rewards. Validator misconduct can lead to slashing.
Governance (OpenGov)
DOT gives voting power in OpenGov. The weight of a vote depends on the amount of DOT committed and any voluntary lock-up period.
Coretime
Parachains access Relay Chain resources by bonding or buying DOT – in bulk or on demand.
Fees
DOT pays for Relay Chain transactions and cross-chain messaging costs.
DOT supply and issuance
In 2020 DOT was redenominated at a ratio of 100:1 – the original 10 million DOT became 1 billion units. In November 2024 a fixed annual issuance of approx. 120 million DOT was adopted (approx. 85% to stakers, 15% to the treasury), and in March 2026 the community introduced a supply cap of 2.1 billion DOT and reduced issuance.
Issuance is set to decline gradually as supply approaches the cap. Supply parameters are changed through OpenGov votes.
Who created Polkadot?
Polkadot’s principal founder is Gavin Wood, who published the project’s white paper in October 2016. The co-founders are Robert Habermeier and Peter Czaban, and the technology was developed under commission by Parity Technologies.
The first token sale was run, and development funded, by the Web3 Foundation in Zug, Switzerland. According to the MiCA white paper, DOT has no formal issuer. The Polkadot Community Foundation was set up in 2024 – as the document notes, it is not the issuer of DOT.
